We started because the good stuff wasn't getting through.

In 1982 the natural products business was small, regional and stubbornly independent. Good brands were being made by people who were excellent at making things and less interested in the logistics of getting them onto a shelf three states away. Somebody had to close that gap.

So we did — one store, one brand, one pallet at a time. 44 years later a good deal of the industry has consolidated into a handful of very large distributors, and we are still here, still in Foxboro, still family-run.

Being small is the product.

A national broadliner can move more volume than we can. What it cannot do is tell you which three items out of 2,362 are going to move in a store your size, in your region, this season. That judgement is the thing we actually sell.

Our customers pick up brands they have never heard of because we brought them in. They do that because we have not wasted their shelf space before. That is not a service you can buy — it accrues, slowly, over 44 years, and it is the reason stores that opened before we did are still ordering from us every week.

We find things early.

Because we are small and because we have been at it a long time, we tend to see what is coming before it arrives. We have brought lines into New England years before the national distributors picked them up. We are watching the refillery movement closely right now — it is the most interesting thing to happen to independent retail in a decade, and we have built our bulk programme around it.

How we work.

• Wholesale only. We sell to shops, co-ops, apothecaries and refilleries. We do not sell to the public and we do not compete with our own customers.
• $250 for free freight. Mix and match across every brand we carry to reach it.
• Nationwide. New England is our home, but we ship UPS anywhere in the country.
• Order however suits you. Online, phone, fax or email. None of those channels are going away.
• Monthly specials. A whole-brand discount, 10–20%, with a calendar-month buy-in window.
